MOTORISTS ANNOUNCE NEW LP NEVER SING ALONE TO BE RELEASED MARCH 6 VIA WE ARE TIME
NEW SINGLE “FROGMAN” OUT NOW
Toronto power-pop quartet Motorists return today with new single “Frogman,” out now via We Are Time Records and arriving as the first preview of the band’s forthcoming LP since Cristobal. Recorded across studios in Toronto, Brooklyn, and Gothenburg, “Frogman” opens a new chapter for Motorists, with their third LP Never Sing Alone, out March 6, 2025.
Produced and mixed by Chris Cohen, the acclaimed songwriter and producer known for his work formerly in Deerhoof and his acclaimed solo records on Captured Tracks, “Frogman” finds the band leaning deeper than ever into their signature blend of jangly melodicism, introspective storytelling, and sly charm.
“Frogman” traces its origins to an uncanny moment on Vancouver Island, where frontperson Craig Fahner unexpectedly encountered a scuba diver who emerged from the water holding his snagged fishing lure. “After struggling to dislodge it for a few minutes, someone in a scuba suit emerged from the water with my stuck lure in hand. He swam up and handed it back to me, then went back into the water and disappeared. My dad remarked “that Frogman saved you!” The incident, and my dad’s exclamation, stuck in my head for months after.” Fahner recalls.
Fahner’s obsession with the Frogman resulted in this song, which is, to put it simply, about a person whose lover decides to leave the land-loving life and live underwater as a Frogman. “On another level, it’s about the abruptness of loss, of looking into your empty hands wondering where the thing you were just holding went, and whether your life will be the same without it. Musically, we tried to find a similar melancholy aura, leaning into a lush and jaunty jangle-pop feeling which Chris Cohen’s production really brought into its full sparkling glory,” says Fahner.
