RÖYKSOPP INTRODUCE PROFOUND MYSTERIES + REVEAL THIRD INSTALLMENT “IMPOSSIBLE” FEATURING ALISON GOLDFRAPP
NEW ALBUM AVAILABLE APRIL 29 VIA [PIAS]
Röyksopp, the canonical electronic music duo of Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, have just unveiled Profound Mysteries, an expanded creative universe and a prodigious conceptual project, accompanied by the arrival of “Impossible” featuring Alison Goldfrapp. The collaboration lands on the heels of two previously released installments, both of which arrived last month with little in the way of explanation or context. On January 1st, 2022 Röyksopp launched the film “(Nothing But) Ashes…” with messaging encouraging fans to “Press «R»”. A second piece of music, “The Ladder,” was released shortly thereafter alongside a Kasper Häggströmur-directed short film BJA. A new artefact and visualiser, created by Australian contemporary artist Jonathan Zawada, brought the music to life still further. All these elements are accessible through the Profound Mysteries portal.
Now, after yesterday’s premiere of the short film The Downfall by Marc Reisbig, another chapter has been revealed via “Impossible” — rendering Alison Goldfrapp as the first human voice to be heard on Profound Mysteries following the initial instrumentals. A third artefact and visualiser designed by Jonathan Zawada continue to expand the collection. “It’s been great working with the wonderful Svein & Torbjørn from Röyksopp,” states Goldfrapp. “I’ve been a fan of their music for years and it was a fascinating joy creating ‘Impossible’ together. I truly hope everyone enjoys the track as there’s more to come.”
Back in 2014, Röyksopp released what was billed as their final album, The Inevitable End. While Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland vowed to continue making music together, they announced that this was “goodbye to the traditional album format”. Since then, the Norwegian electronic duo remained busy, soundtracking a comedy theatre show based on the work of Franz Kafka, contributing to Rick Rubin’s Star Wars Headspace compilation, and dipping into their archives for the Lost Tapes reissue series.
