ACCLAIMED CANADIAN SINGER, SONGWRITER, AND MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST ROYAL WOOD ANNOUNCES NINTH STUDIO ALBUM DEAR JOHN VIA CORDOVA BAY RECORDS
SHARES BRAND NEW SUMMER ANTHEM “SUNSHINE”
Beloved Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Royal Wood – a two-time JUNO and five-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee – shares brand new summer anthem, “Sunshine”. The track will feature on Wood’s freshly announced, self produced and written album, Dear John, arriving October 17 via Cordova Bay Records.
“‘Sunshine’ is inspired by the Buddhist ideology that behind every cloud is a forever blue sky,” shares Wood. “No matter the metaphoric storm in life, peace and love are always present. Once you steer your heart with this principle, hope and faith return. I wanted the song to feel like sunshine itself. Like I had it in a bottle, and I could drink it. This is my summer jam.”
“Sunshine” arrives on the heels of Wood’s recent single and music video, “Give it Up”, his first musical offering of the year. The irresistible track featuring Grammy-winning musicians Ash Soan (drums) and Hutch Hutchinson (bass), will appear alongside “Sunshine” on the upcoming record.
Following a celebrated national headline tour and a successful run supporting the legendary Bonnie Raitt, Dear John sees Wood collaborating with five-time Grammy-winning mixer Ryan Freeland (Bonnie Raitt, Ray LaMontagne). Described as, ‘a letter to himself’, the album captures both Wood’s signature sincerity and boundary-breaking artistry.
“After last stepping off the Massey Hall stage, I decided that it might be time to retire from music and focus on my family and our dreams,” shares Wood, speaking on the record. “A voice deep inside suddenly became very vocal about what I had to do next. It told me that I needed to honour the child that began my journey in music all those years ago. It told me that I needed to make a true, genuine and unabashed album that the kid in me would love.”
Wood’s music continues to resonate worldwide, amassing over 30 million streams, numerous high-profile placements on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, and frequent playlist features across Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Most recently, his single “A Good Enough Day” was prominently featured in a TV campaign, propelling the track towards 4 million streams.
His previous album, What Tomorrow Brings, received critical acclaim and was considered for “Best Folk Album” at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Crafted alongside world-renowned writer/producers Linda Perry (Adele, Alicia Keys) and Jamie Scott (Ed Sheeran, Michael Kiwanuka), What Tomorrow Brings saw Wood reach new emotional depths and deliver his most powerful collection of music to date.
Known for translating his recorded work into captivating live performances, Royal Wood has headlined prestigious venues like Massey Hall in Toronto and Paradiso in Amsterdam, and toured extensively with acclaimed artists including Bonnie Raitt and David Gray.
