SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BEN VAUGHN – MAGNETIC EAST: THE DEER TICK SESSIONS

Ben Vaughn

BEN VAUGHN
MAGNETIC EAST: THE DEER TICK SESSIONS
YEP ROC RECORDS

There are rock veterans and then there are rock veterans on today’s music scene. Ones just keep on treading stale music waters (let’s not name names here), while others keep on trying something new or stick to their original concept guns but keep on refreshing their music accordingly, as well as going into other connected areas at the same time.

Count Philadelphia’s Ben Vaughn into the latter category, who after appearing on the scene way back in 1983 as a sort of an American answer to pub rock, who not only kept coming up with refreshing music as a band leader, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, but also ventured into other waters as a producer and podcaster.

Most importantly he keeps coming up with new variations on his original musical vision, this time in collaboration with Americana rockers Deer Tick, as their joint album Magnetic East: The Deer Tick Sessions amply shows. It is yet another set of almost perfectly crafted rock songs (and you can call it classic or semi-classic if you will), that might not experiment but vary the sound along with Vaughn’s unchangeable sense of lyrical wit. Still great to have both parties involved around.
