DISTRICT FIVE RELEASES NEW SINGLE “REFLECTIONS”
BAND ANNOUNCES THIRD STUDIO ALBUM ON STONE PIXELS RECORDS
Swiss band District Five is set to release their third studio album Come Closer on October 25 via Stone Pixels. The album was recorded at Suburban Sound Studio Winterthur in Zurich and mastered by Jasper Ward (David Bowie, Miles David, Dolly Parton). The first single “Reflections” is out now.
Over the past three years the lives of the band members have undergone significant changes. Initially an instrumental quartet consisting of Vojko Huter, Paul Amereller, Tapiwa Svosve, and Xaver Rüegg, District Five experienced the formation and dissolution of relationships, constantly moving houses, financial struggles, mental health challenges, and the loss of loved ones. Come Closer reflects their journey of seeking connection both with themselves and others and the many challenges that accompany this quest. The album showcases a broad range of influences, from post-punk and math-rock to jazz and electronica, all intertwined with free improvisation and ambient soundscapes.
Bassist Xaver Rüegg says about the album: “For us, Come Closer is a tribute to our friendship and a fusion of our four personalities. We’ve never been this vulnerable and honest with each other. We surprised and challenged each other to think differently. Each song exists in its own universe, filled with details and unusual rhythms, yet remains danceable and hopeful. Whether you’re driving south or taking a meditative walk in the woods, this album offers comfort and connection. It’s a collective effort from all of us, bringing everything together—as the title track says, ‘It circles back to community’.”
District Five evolves with every release. Their debut EP Decoy (2018) drew inspiration from jazz and experimental rock. With Burnt Sugar (2022), the band introduced vocals and electronic effects, while Pause (2023) had an intimate and dreamy character shaped by late-night jam sessions. Come Closer is a continuation of this artistic growth. The first single “Reflections” symbolizes their new sound. The track is about feeling disoriented in a whirlwind of movement, unsure of where to go as reflections of yourself appear everywhere. “A line in the song ‘keep the mirrors turning’ reminds us how mirrors can create infinite versions of ourselves, much like the song went through countless iterations before reaching its final form. The result is a forward-driving anthem. Despite its title, the track is immediate and persuasive, with groovy 2007-inspired guitars and a punchy 2024 vibe.” – says Xaver.
After years of touring and performing at major festivals such as Montreux Jazz, The Great Escape, and Reeperbahn, District Five continues to captivate audiences with their hypnotic and genre-defying sound. Their DIY approach reflects their artistic freedom and the strength of their long-standing friendship
