PETE FIJ – “CUCKOO”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Pete Fij will release his crystalline, grandiose track “Cuckoo,” February 10, he latest preview of his forthcoming album Up’s The New Down, due out this summer via Tip Top Records. The track follows album single “Love’s Coming Back,” Renowned for his unmistakable voice and wry lyrical touch, Pete Fij(alkowski) makes a welcome return with fresh solo material – unveiling songs that brim with melody, wit and understated charm.
“I’m a Cold War kid, whose parents escaped from behind the Iron Curtain (my dad was sent to Siberia by the Soviets but managed to escape through Afghanistan, whilst my mum used forged papers to slip over the western border to escape from Communist Poland), and perhaps it’s this background that has led to my fascination with the murky world of espionage,” Fij explains of the track. “One of my favourite films of recent times is David Leitch’s 2017 spy thriller Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron kicking traitors’ butts in late 80’s neon-lit Berlin. ‘Cuckoo’ is my take on the spirit of that film, with Siousxie Sioux driving the getaway car as Phil Oakey from The Human League takes aim through a night time telescopic view finder. The lyrics are made up predominantly of espionage terms, though as the song progresses they get mixed up to create their own code.”
Slinging back on the electric guitar, ditching the job, upping the BPMs, and falling in love again has resulted in Pete embracing his fuzzed up dream-pop past but also throwing in elements of pop and electronica.
