TULLYCRAFT – “LOVE ON THE LEFT BANK”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Seattle, Washington indiepop legends Tullycraft are back with a new single “Love on the Left Bank” off their upcoming album Shoot The Point, which hits the record store shelves and on most digital platforms on August 22nd on the HHBTM Records label. “Love on the LeftBank” is pure indiepop bliss, the kind that inspires one to start a tape label, form their first band, go to a popfest, do a zine, or start a DIY basement venue. Tullycraft have always kept the songs simple and full of hooks, but even more full of inside jokes and easter eggs for all the twee kids. Tullycraft are as clever as Belle & Sebastian but without being sad, as earnest as Jonathan Richman but a bit more tongue-in-cheek, as poppy as Apples in stereo, but without all the psychedelics. Hard to believe a band that is about to be in their 30th year is still cranking out indiepop classic after classic this far into a career. Take a little time to enjoy this new single, and be sure to pick up or stream the album on the 22nd.
The story behind the song by Sean Tollefson of Tullycraft
“In her 2010 memoir ‘Just Kids,’ Patti Smith wrote about finding a “battered copy” of the book ‘Love on the Left Bank’ sitting on a sale table outside a used-book store in Philadelphia in 1967. For some reason, this intrigued me, and I went in search of this book. First published in 1956, ‘Love on the Left Bank’ was one of the first photobooks to document the birth of rebellious youth culture in Europe. It featured photographs by Ed van der Elsken (a Dutch photographer). The book follows the fictional story of Ann, a bohemian living in Paris in the 1950s. The grainy monochrome images showcase the Parisian underworld, depicting prostitutes, junkies, drunks, and a few older eccentrics. The story is told entirely with photos. This was my initial inspiration for the song “Love on the Left Bank.”
It began as a semi-typical breakup song (“I won’t miss you, if you don’t miss me”), but along the way it took some twists and turns, as most songs do when you’re writing them. If you listen closely, you might catch a reference to ‘Five Easy Pieces’ – the 1970 film set in the Pacific Northwest that starred Jack Nicholson. Also, there are nods to the 1957 film ‘A Face in the Crowd’ (which starred Andy Griffith), King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut (a music venue located in Glasgow, Scotland that took its name from a 1980’s club located in New York City), and Pepsi & Shirlie (the backing singers for George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s band Wham!). There are a few other hidden homages that I’ll let the listener discover on their own.
While recording this track, our engineer (Pete Remine) let the tape run past the end of the song while Chris and Cori were recording backing vocals. The ridiculousness of the repeated chant “Oh-Uh-Oh-Uh” became apparent while they were singing it, and uncontrollable laughter ensued. It was so funny to all of us that we decided to leave it in.”
