SILT – “YOU HATE IT”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
With luminous pop soundscapes and charming indie-faceted melodies, Australian-based alt-pop trio Silt are releasing their lead single ‘You Hate It’ ahead of their debut EP and we here at Spill Magazine are very excited to premiere it before it’s out on Friday, Sept 3.
The Melbourne act emerged in 2019 and have since been drip-feeding singles that radiate with their pop magnetism and mellow indie-rock style. In June, the band gave their first taste of this impending EP with the incandescent single ‘I Always Need A Break’ – a must listen.
Now, with the debut EP release swiftly approaching, the female-fronted band releasing the lead single ‘You Hate It’ – a sweeping, high-ceilinged track that features flourishing guitars, grounded drums and the delicate vocal tones from Jess Polain.
The slow-burning song is pushed forward by Polain, backed by rising harmonies in the choruses as she delivers confident vocal melody lines made up of bold and empowering lyrics. The ever-changing track evolves with various drum patterns, strings and keys, surging with dulcet dramatism that seems to push and pull with the swirling instrumental layers.
Standing out are Polain’s brooding and inspiring lyrics that explore her need for space and boundaries and learning how to take back her own control and power. Polain states:
“I wrote this in a bit of a state. All the lyrics were written on a train home from work after I had spent the day stewing over a particular argument. Something that always seems to crop up in my songwriting is my need for space, and learning how to ask for it and set boundaries. This song is no exception. I have to say I am very proud of this one, especially the very direct, almost stream-of-consciousness lyrics in the bridge.”
‘You Hate It’ is out everywhere on Friday, September 3 and their debut EP Contact High is coming out on October 1. Contrary to the title track, we know you’ll love it – check out the single below!
