In this fierce new track, Safari Room trades introspective lyricism and dreamy sonics for raw and biting, riff- rock. “The King” showcases the eerier side of Safari Room’s catalogue, peeling back to reveal a different kind of darkness. Through spooky instrumentation and various time-signature changes, this track paints the picture of an ever-shifting landscape with twists and turns around every corner. Very much like our current political landscape, which the song narrates with passion. “The King” is atypical Safari Room lyricism but still under the through-line of angst and disquiet. This time around, it’s less of a haunting from within and more of what lurks in the political atmosphere. It jabs at the cast of folks pulling the strings from above, claiming to be steering the ship in our best interest. Or are they?

“The King” is one of the angrier songs I’ve written, and I’m stoked to see it come to fruition. It touches on some influences I don’t usually get to draw from, and it was cathartic to tap into riff-ier and edgier sounds for this track. ~Alec Koukol
