NXNE 2024 – LUKAH
@ THE DRAKE UNDERGROUND, TORONTO
JUNE 13, 2024
Memphis Export Music treated NXNE to a Lukah performance at the Drake Underground on Thursday night. The lyrical rapper unleashed a consortium of rhymes on an unexpecting crowd. Lukah is an expert storyteller, and often comments on racial plight from a personal perspective, one that is filled with grit and perseverance. This was evident in his performance of “A Black Man’s Worst Fear”, a story about a nail-biting interaction with the police. Lukah’s music builds on boom-bap beats with jazz instrumentals that have a sinister edge, reminiscent of the patented Griselda Records sound. He performed songs off his latest album, Temple Needs Water. Village Needs Peace, produced by Real Bad Man. The highlight of Lukah’s set came when he previewed music from an upcoming album with Statik Selektah. Vicious piano chords filled the room while Lukah picked his energy up and rapped like he had rent due. Though the audience was caught off-guard, many were vibing and receptive to grime-heavy sound by the end of the set. With a distinctively Southern sound, Lukah is a definite must for all lyrical hip-hop and boom-bap fans.
