SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: VELCROS – STRANGE NEWS FROM THE VAULT

VELCROS

VELCROS
STRANGE NEWS FROM THE VAULT
CRAZYSANE RECORDS

VELCROS are a super fun band that knows how to rock. Their album Strange News From The Vault might not be the most original record out there, as the sound becomes too imitative at times of other artists, however, most tracks have enough charm and intensity to make up for the lack of originality.

High-octane energy, hard-hitting and crisp drums, an energetic punk rock attitude, kinetic and punchy guitar riffs with tons of heat, and powerful vocals make “Bitter Lake”, “The Invisible Hand”, and “Devotion” boom with electricity. They might be lacking in originality, but do they ever kick ass.

“Hollowed” is full of gnarly guitar riffs and a ferocious attitude to go with it. If the track were shorter, around the three-min mark it would have been more memorable. “Fading Too” is much quieter than other tracks from the album but manages to have the best atmosphere. It is gloomy, sombre, and quite bleak. One or two more songs that take a softer approach, like “Fading Too”, would have made the album a bit better. “On Your Own” has a super infectious vocal performance that quickly gets stuck in your head. “Avalanche” has some cool moments, most notably the garage-rock feel, but the excitement of the track cools down quite quickly. “Troubled Mind” is an okay track, but it is too imitative of The Strokes and The Hives, causing the track to grow stale as time goes by.

Not all guitar riffs are memorable, hit hard, or raise the roof, but the drums never fail. The drums on this record are phenomenal and do a fantastic job pulling you into each track.

Overall, Strange News from the Vault is a solid rock record.
