Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming
Spacebomb Records
If Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming, as an album title sounds like a far-fetched psychedelic dream, then you probably aren’t much far off. That is exactly how Brooklyn NY, artist Nicole Rodriguez, aka Pearla decided to name her debut album (she released an EP in 2019).
After all, it is all vivid imagery with Rodriguez, both with her music and her lyrics, all of it varying from deeply arranged singer songwriter stuff to baroque pop of “Effort” or ‘true’ psychedelia of “The Place With No Weather.”
What Pearla does throughout this album is blend the original modernized folk of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell and roots it in a current musical setting with some darker lyrical touches akin to Will Oldham.
And it all works brilliantly throughout the album, Pearla’s quirky touches, even when she goes country(so to say) on “About Hunger, About Love” underline the essence of both her music and lyrics. More than just a very good debut album.
