SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: LUCA WILDING – LUCA WILDING

Luca Wilding

Another new day, another singer/songwriter, another debut EP. Sounds too familiar? In most cases, yes. In others, however, you sense that there might be something substantial on its way. Luckily for London artist Luca Wilding, and even more so for his potential listeners, his debut self-titled EP is more of the latter.

Singer/songwriters by their vocation should be storytellers. But, for their stories to really come through, they have to have substance, they have to be excellent songwriters, and their vocals have to shine. In most cases, the latter is important because the instrumentation is usually quite sparse, and the arrangements serve to embellish the vocals and the story.

On the evidence of the four tracks here, Wilding covers all these possible trappings with ease – good storytelling, great vocals, quality songwriting and tasteful arrangements.

Need more? Actually, yes. EPs often serve as a teaser of things to come, and Luca Wilding goes on to show that what is coming could be some excellent music.
