Knocked Loose is back with their third studio album, You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. This marks their first album in nearly five years since their second studio effort, A Different Shade of Blue. You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To succeeds in making one of the most unique bands out there pioneers of their craft, with a quite consistent and bold third effort.

“Thirst” is an unmistakable heart-pounding opening that, through the many little clashes heard in its sound at first right before nicely kicking into the banging hit of metalcore, tells you that this is a statement. Not just to the artistic merit of the band, but also to what this album is. It is, simply, a creative playground. Without the itching little bangs of a sound reminiscent of metal dishes clashing together in the beginning, this track would slip into artificialness. The little, smart and clever choices to demonstrate artistic creativity all come together perfectly to convey, as the title of the track suggests, that feeling of thirst. Thankfully, this peak in sound reached here remains constant on a work that feels nearly a decade in the making with the consistent level of gold found here.

You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To amazes as much as it thrills with tracks that live up to the band’s usual quality and never slips, unlike some of their previous efforts, into inconsistency. It is a work of high highs and mostly absent of lows. The production here stands out, with the stimulating sounds produced on every track capturing a unique authenticity in their defining style and sound. The vocal performances throughout are quite nice, with a constant use of louder vocals, though this is interspersed, such as with the opener, with more quiet sounds that give it a steadfast yet relaxed feel all at once. An honourable aspect of this album is how it breaks conventions. This is not just a work filled with loud vocals and instruments but rather a nicely put-together bow matching loud vocals and sounds with precise and peculiar production that makes You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To a dazzling accomplishment.

Overall, You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is a clashing third album that intertwines, like their previous work, the band’s unique style with the defining styles of metalcore, and mashes up to become their strongest and most cohesive effort yet.
