SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JULIAN CUBILLOS – JULIAN CUBILLOS

Julian Cabillos

JULIAN CUBILLOS
JULIAN CUBILLOS
RUINATION RECORDS

Who releases a debut album in the midst of a summer heat (at least that is the usual July weather in NYC) when most big, small or non-existent record labels have a pause in their release schedule? Well, probably an artist or a band that is coming up with light airy (and very catchy) take on lo-fi psych pop that should be perfect for breezy summer weather, and in this case it is Julian Cubillos, one NYC resident that decided to release his debut self-titled album exactly at such a time.

And somehow, the 10 tracks Cubillos presents here are not only a perfect summer weather fit, but present a fully formed artist that knows exactly what he is doing, with assuredness that goes far beyond an album that is a debut. That assuredness and the actual high quality of his music might stem from the fact that Cubillos has already been in high demand as multi-instrumentalist for Okkervil River and Will Sheff, The Antlers, Christian Lee Hutson, Alena Spanger, Adeline Hotel, and more. All of it just rises the stakes for Cubillos and what is to come next from him.

by Samantha Andujar on August 28, 2026
