Going for a theme or a concept in your music can be a double-edged sword for many artists, particularly singer-songwriters. Even though it is done in songs (chapters, if you will) the theme has to be cohesive and relevant to a wider audience. At the same time, the music it is set to has not only to be good but fitting to that theme/concept.
Vancouver’s Haley Blais has decided to take that route with her second album Wisecrack. Her theme – the formation of new families amidst the dissolution of her parents’ relationship.
It is a touchy, personal theme, but Blais has quite a delicate, light touch with her lyrics that she is able to relate to others listening to her music, not just herself. At the same time, her music and vocals also have the same delicate, light touch that is coupled with some intricate arrangements, making this album quite a delightful listen.
