For the first time in over a decade, Finger Eleven has released a full-length album with Last Night On Earth. The Canadian rock veterans have remained active for the last 11 years, releasing a handful of singles and, most notably, 2023’s Greatest Hits. Their latest LP, Last Night On Earth, marks their first studio album since 2014’s Five Crooked Lines.

Last Night On Earth kicks off with the lead single, “Adrenaline,” a track that builds with suspenseful undertones before approaching a jarring and explosive chorus that feels reminiscent of an electronic bass drop. Through the organic build-up, “Adrenaline” properly stokes the excitement that continues forward with the crunching riffs of “Blue Sky Mystery,” which features additional vocals from Filter’s Richard Patrick. Between these tracks and the following, “Cold Concrete,” Finger Eleven has firmly established their return with a hard-hitting trio that utilizes a unique electronic influence, as heard through various production effects and rhythms. This is a particularly unique element that gives Last Night On Earth a slight experimental edge.

As the album continues, Finger Eleven offers a greater range to their performance and songwriting. “Lock Me Up” stands as a fantastic example, as the song transforms from a sparse, acoustic song to a densely-layered and grungy arrangement. The title track offers yet another mood in the shape of an acoustic ballad, laden with lush strings, demonstrating a level of tenderness and raw vulnerability. While both tracks, not to mention the stark album closer, “Body And Mind,” are great and allow for the band to flex their songwriting, Last Night On Earth shines brightest when Finger Eleven begin digging into heavier material. Songs like “The Mountain,” “Perfect Effigy,” and “Laughing At The Storm,” in addition to the first three songs on the LP, demonstrate the power behind the band.

Over the course of 11 songs, Finger Eleven puts it all on the line for their first album in over a decade. With a renewed sound that is both distinctive and adventurous, Last Night On Earth ushers in a new era for the band as they play with a range of influences, tones, and textures to enhance their songwriting. Last Night On Earth is the band’s long-awaited return, capturing the raw energy and sensibilities that have made Finger Eleven one of Canada’s most enduring bands of the last two decades.
