Death Valley Girls
Islands In The Sky
Suicide Squeeze Records
As they continue to grow as a band, Death Valley Girls are back, with 11 mystical tracks on Islands In The Sky. The concept of this record and main themes are based on the experience of Bonnie Bloomgarden, songwriter, and her unknown illness that made her write love messages for her future self as a way of healing.
The opening track βCalifornia Mountain Shakeβ welcomes the audience with a smooth but intriguing melody, alongside harmonic vocals that start a magic trip. The next three songs have the same rhythmic structure of a girl garage band, with punk blues vibes every now and then, and energetic rock βnβ roll. The catchy chorus βwe are living in a simulated world/and we are simulated girlsβ from βWhat Are The Oddsβ makes the record turn into a danceable one. Nevertheless, just mid album, βJourney To Dog Starβ works as a hazy and mysterious interlude that marks the beginning of slow rhythms in the songs left. βItβs All Really Kind of Amazingβ, being the final track, closes out the record with a noticeable β60s sound, soulful voices, and a final message of life being amazing no matter the circumstances.
Altogether, the album is a stunning piece of garage music, thanks to their well-made structure that follows an esoteric succession of melodies accompanied by spiritual lyricism of love and acceptance. Additionally, for those who are looking for experimental tunes, this record may be a convenient choice.
