Upon hearing a new album, one thing music fans usually try first is trying to define and categorise the music they are listening to – try and fit it into nice and clear category or categories. Maybe that seems an easier way to process somebody’s music.

That process might get a bit complicated with Australian singer songwriter Carla dal Forno and her latest album Confessions. Ok, the lyrics here are something quite a few listeners can relate to – an introspective concept and inward look, something singer songwriters often do (not so many as good as del Forno, mind you).

Yet, trying to put your finger at the music into which dal Forno fits her lyrics in can become a tricky affair as it in no way suits the usual concepts of what a singer songwriter music should sound like – as if On-U Sound guru Adrian Sherwood is tackling the kind of songs Angelo Badalamenti wrote for late Julee Cruise combined with some elements, well, you can’t put your fingers on, but your ears like quite a bit.
