SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BLUTENGEL – FOUNTAIN OF DESTINY

Fountain Of Destiny
Out Of Line Music

German goth-electronic band Blutengel are here to take fans on a trip through memory lane with their new album Fountain of Destiny. A cover collection of ‘80s hits, their latest album includes fan favourite songs from the likes of Duran Duran, Erasure, Alphaville, Heart, and A-ha.

Blutengel frontman Chris Pohl has taken care to maintain the integrity with their covers, so these songs still sound very much like the original while still maintaining a distinctive Blutengel vibe.

The immediate standout from Fountain of Destiny is their cover of Alphaville’s “Forever Young”. Moody yet uplifting, Pohl’s voice is a promise of better times to come. Counteracting that is their take on Gary Numan’s “Down in the Park” which is dystopian and discordant and their beautifully twisted version of Propaganda’s “Mr Mabuse”.

Blutengel’s other half Ulrike Goldmann provides vocals for Heart’s “Alone” and Yazoo’s “Nobody’s Diary”. Where Goldmann usually sings backup to Pohl, here her vocals truly shine and the nuances of her voice are clear.

Included with their covers are two original tracks “Unsere Zeit” – a classic Blutengel track throughout – and the instrumental “Journey To The Edge Of The Night” with a steady progressive dance beat that will get people moving.
