With some 20 years on the music scene, Toronto’s Avi C. Engel (they/them) is no newcomer. During that period, they have accumulated quite a serious catalogue, which their Bandcamp page will amply show you.

Yet, there seems to be no standing still or musical rut there, and their latest 5 track EP, Strangling Vine, is here to prove that point.

You simply cannot label Engel as your standard singer songwriter, as they have that experimental spirit to combine acoustics and electronics, but without sacrificing melody or lyrical content. At the same time, it seems that the long experience on the music scene has given Engel the necessary assuredness to make their experimental touch actually work towards their musical goals, whether it is one of the ‘standard’ length tracks here or the 10-min musical excursion that is “Owl Flies Home.” Simply said, good stuff.
