Amy Stroup
Since Frank
Independent
What constitutes pop, or good pop for that matter, is a debate that will probably not end, at least not soon. In his great (and very voluminous) book on the story of modern pop titled Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, the great writer, producer, and leader of St. Etienne, Bob Stanley, considers everything from country to rock to be any modern music form as pop, the question remains whether it is good or not.
And Nashville’s Amy Stroup creates some excellent pop, particularly on her latest album Since Frank.Β
No, Stroup doesn’t really deal in ‘real’ country, although you might find some personal observations in her lyrics fit quite well in any (good) country song. You see, Stroup likes her pop modern and straight up, with electronically based production and some so well-structured songs.
And it all sounds good and so easy on the ear because she has such an easy touch with her melodies and knows how to conjure good personal images through her lyrics without sounding introverted.
If you want to know what a good modern pop album sounds like, you don’t have to go much further than Stroup.
