BUILDINGS AND FOOD
ECHO THE FIELD
INDEPENDENT
Strictly defining certain body of music and trying to fit it snugly within a certain genre, can be a tricky process, particularly with artists that don’t care much about where their music fits, just as long as it sounds good to their ears and those of their audience.
One category you can easily fit the music of Jen K. Wilson, aka Buildings and Food, and her latest album is ‘electronic’, but from there on, all lines are blurred, not only because Wilson throws in acoustic instrumentation here and there, but because she dreamily wanders from ambient to post rock, to modern classical and anywhere else modern instrumental music that mainly relies on electronics goes.
At the same time, she so easily escapes the possible trappings of modern electronic music, the ones that make it sound like musical wallpaper, and she does it not only by keeping her compositions brief, but by combining elements in such a manner that keeps her music engaging and interesting, often quite a feat with instrumental music these days.
