Thunder Queens is a trio out of London, Ontario, consisting of Violet Bruneel, Lola Hayman, and Clara Magnan. Their debut album, Strike One, is a rocking good time of punk, grunge, 70s metal, and riot grrrl.

Strike One is full of exciting and heavy guitar riffs and solos that pack a punch. Some highlights include; the sludgy and harsh hard rock riffs of the politically charged “All These Problems”, the intense Black Sabbath-esque riffs and melodic solo of “Cymbals”, the dark grunge opener of “Lo-Vi”, and the head-banging fast-paced punk riffs of “Roadtrip”.

“Jumpin’ Around” is an entertaining and catchy tune. It has superb vocal harmonies reminiscent of The Runaways and is full of raw punk energy. “Fighter” is another terrific song that features some nasty guitar riffs, killer drums, awesome bass, and a great chorus. The song was actually penned when the members were the ages of nine and ten. If you are a fan of Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl”, you will probably enjoy this track a lot. Lastly, “Walking Away” is a blast. The pounding opening guitar riff and powering drums are great and have a Queens of the Stone Age edge to them. It also features the best vocals from the record.

Strike One is an impressive debut album from Thunder Queens.
