KANAK – “WITHOUT A CLUE”

Taken from their recently released EP On The Outside, New Jersey rockers KANAK launch into a snide clapback for a relationship gone bad in their new video “Without A Clue.” Straitjacketed in a padded cell, lead singer Tom Kanach relives scenes from past arguments and betrayals that flashback in silhouettes. Disheveled and looking like he’s been put through the ringer, Kanach rocks back and forth, constrained and contained in his emotions, unsure of what’s next. But it’s the seething yet melodic chorus “I don’t know what the hell I’m gonna do about it / Find myself all alone, and end up without a clue” that hammers it home in a cathartic and empowering final flipoff “So fuck you.” It’s that dichotomy that fuels the song’s infectiousness and compels anyone who’s been done wrong to sing along.
“It’s a contrast- a sing-song sweet melody over snotty but poppy guitar rock with angry lyrics,” Kanach explains. “I thought it would be a nice juxtaposition to sing bitter angry lyrics to a lullaby-ish melody line. I imagined singing the song through clenched teeth, trying desperately to keep it together.”
“When it came time to make the video,” he adds, “I wanted to demonstrate how seriously the victim had been wounded by that betrayal. I imagined what it would feel like screaming and ranting in pain and rage into the security monitors…hoping that the message would somehow be seen by the betrayer… letting them know that while the hurt was inflicted, they didn’t win.”
