The ‘90s grunge movement changed music, providing a platform that brought alternative rock to the masses. Nirvana was the catalyst, sparking a frenzy for bands that would have otherwise remained underground. Record labels were eager to cash in, and The Cranberries were beneficiaries. Their album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? captured this moment and attitude perfectly as they embraced the grunge influence, carving their niche in the alternative landscape.

In 1993, their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? a mix of Irish folk, grunge, and post-punk, made The Cranberries part of a decisive point in music history, along with the likes of Radiohead, Bjork, and Belly all releasing hit debuts that year. After 30 years, it is reissued as a special edition on solid gold vinyl. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? delivers a unique edge; not as heavy with political prowess, familiar to their later work, it packs a punch with hits that shape and influence. This reissue is layered with nostalgia; Dolores O’Riordan, lyricist genus, is delivered well as “Linger”, the first song she wrote for the band.

What works well with this album is the gentle feeling it evokes; there is a lightness to the lyrics, a freshness in which one song leads into another seamlessly, like a loop. The haunting vocals completely rule this album, “Waltzing Back” is on a whole other level, with chaotic crescendos that plateau. I would be lying if I said “Dreams” wasn’t a standout, empowering vocals and rolling beats. It is a motivating force – and will always remain one of my favourites. It’s a highly recommended album for those seeking the healing powers of music.
