Whatever’s Clever
Back in the late 90s folktronica was all the rage. But somehow, and for whatever reason, the whole shebang seemed to have been lost, with or without translation, with most of the artists going one specific way or the other.
Luckily, it seems producer, cellist, and singer Laura Wolf still sees something in such a combination, as her latest mini-album Shelf Life, recalls the best days of folktronica, without falling into any of the traps the genre might have had.
Namely, instead of just strapping light, folky melodies on top of some nifty or not electronics and beats, Wolf seems to have thoroughly dissected all the genres she wanted to use here, and then slowly pieced them up together in an order that she saw fit.
By taking such an approach, she has come up with some fresh, thoroughly inventive music here that actually transcends folktronica as such and brings up something truly new.
