SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: CALLUM PITT – IN THE BALANCE

Callum Pitt

Callum Pitt
In The Balance
Kaleidoscope Music

Very often, it is quite a challenge for artists releasing a debut album, not only to come up with right music, but also with a title that would describe that music the best.

Newcastle, England singer-songwriter Callum Pitt, seems to have hit the target when he named his album In the Balance.

Yet, by coming up with such a title, he had to come up with music that actually is in the balance – something that takes all the advantages of singer-songwriter genre, without falling into its usual traps of just solo acoustic backing and introvert personal musings, the possible pit(t)s, that is.

First of all, Pitt uses a wide instrumental array and arrangements to portray his songs and he does that to a full effect. On the other hand, although with his lyrics he tackles sensitive personal subjects like battling with depression and anxiety, he is able to escape any melodrama or over-sensitiveness, making all the nine songs here shine as they should. Excellent debut.
