Let’s be clear about Ally Cribb and her latest EP Unbroken – it is pop, pure and simple.

Now there’s three facts about pop to keep in mind here. It has to follow a set formula of being either catchy, upbeat or having a slow easy to follow melody. It should have an almost immaculate production and not be overly long and most importantly, it can only be divided into good or bad pop.

Sticking to these rules is actually very hard, and only the best in the field can do it. Whether Toronto artist Cribb can be counted among those best in the field is yet to be fully seen but on the evidence of her immensely successful version of Radiohead’s “Creep” and this seven-track EP, she’s making good strides towards that accolade.

Here, Cribb follows all the good pop rules to a tee – she comes up with a great, upbeat single in “Bigger” but is more inclined to go the good melody in a ballad way (all other tracks), even trying to push the boundaries while respecting pop rules (“Halifax Time”).

Now, key lies in the fact that Cribb has both the singing and songwriting talent and engages some good production here to make both Unbroken work and show promise that she can go to greater heights.
