SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: KING GARBAGE – HEAVY METAL GREASY LOVE

King Garbage

King Garbage
Heavy Metal Greasy Love
Ipecac Recordings

You think you haven’t heard of King Garbage before? Well, maybe you should think again. Behind that moniker, under which the band is releasing it second album, Heavy Metal Greasy Love, lies the producing duo of Zach Cooper and Vic Dimotsis, who have produced almost everybody, including the likes of The Weeknd, SZA and Ellie Goulding.

On the other hand, looking at the album title, if you are expecting the duo to delve into some weird heavy metal, you might be on a completely wrong track. Still the term heavy actually may apply here, as Cooper and Dimotsis come up with some modernized version of soul with accent on heavy brass and heavy rhythms throughout.

Yet, the duo never forgets where all this came from, forsaking some of the more strictly dance-oriented stuff they produced for others, for some modification of the original soul, R&B, funk – the whole package. To it, they apply all the modern production techniques they have proven to be adept with and come up with some quite delicious, ahem, soulful results.

“It’s a taste of retro without being a reproduction”, observes Vic. “Love and life are very sweet, bitter, and heavy. You’re going to need big tires and a dense frame to cross the desert life can give you. The name felt right. The music is crispy, searing, spacious, sandy, and welded with perfect dimes at the seams.”

‘Heavy Metal Greasy Love,’ indeed. The title fits perfectly.
