THE SMILE CASE – “SOMEONE THAT CARES ABOUT ME”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
“Flashback to spring of 1998 and it’s New Music Tuesday. CanCon heroes The Killjoys just dropped their 3rd full length Melos Modos and after being in love with the single “I’ve Been Good All Winter” 12 year old Ben Andress can’t wait to get his chubby fingers on a copy of the CD from his BMG Mail Order club subscription. He can’t wait to see them at the Norfolk Country fair that summer. He can’t wait for the following spring to go see Star Wars: Episode One and pig out on Lays chips just so he can get that Jar Jar Binks keychain. He can’t wait to go into high school and start his first punk rock band called The Smile Case. He can’t wait to be a man living his midlife crisis in small town Southern Ontario while soaking in a worldwide pandemic. Fast forward to spring of 2021 and Ben Andress of The Smile Case is now living his midlife crisis and documenting it on a record called Only On The LoneliestΒ Nights. He got his CanCon hero, Juno Award winner Mike Treblicock of The Killjoys, to produce the record which drops June 25th via Blacktop Records. The first single is a groovy banger called “Someone That Cares About Me”Β which is a song about growing up without a father and having to grow into the role of being a father yourself.”
Artist Quote
“The recording process for this album has been totally different and more relaxed than any other album sessions I’ve had solo or full band. Mike is a magic producer and having his input and spice added on this record hasΒ helped shape and tell the story. I purchased a lot of keyboards and organs from thrift stores during the start of the pandemic. I felt like the stories trapped inside these instruments left to die a Goodwill death needed to be saved. All those instruments show up on the record and helped me dive into some deep topics I’ve never touched upon in song before.”
