Although there have not been many new Frigs releases since their 2018 debut album, Basic Behaviour, this Toronto-based band has been very busy. Three quarters of the band provided expert backup for Orville Peck during the past year and a half, and while touring and recording with him, have been working on their own material. Rave And Rupture In Music As Disaster is a taste of what is to come.

Rave And Rupture In Music As Disaster was available for 48 hours on their Bandcamp page, and will receive a more conventional release in 2021. This is a shame as it is a fantastic addition to their ever-growing catalogue.

Opening with the energetic “Pleasure”, the band moves swiftly through the five-track set, moving easily between different styles and genres. Bri Salemena’s vocals are stark and she can range from straight-ahead rock vocals into her own distinct growls. Always fitting the music, she can conjure the spirit of Patti Smith on “Hack Job”) or Siouxsie Sioux on “Protect”, while creating her own distinct style.

Backed by the powerhouse trio of Duncan Hay Jennings on guitar, Lucas Savatti on bass, and Kris Bowering on drums, the band creates excursions into sound. One thing is for sure, Rave And Rupture In Music As Disaster is full of excitement. It is almost organized noise at points, but never misses the mark.

Frigs have, once again, proven themselves with this EP. It will be worth the wait for those unlucky enough not to have obtained a copy, but rest assured, Frigs show that they are continuing to grow and create original, timeless music. Rave And Rupture In Music As Disaster  is a brilliant release and demonstrates a band not only securing their footing but stepping into the right direction.
