SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: YUKA – DREAMSCAPE

Dreamscape is the third album from Toronto based funk/soul outfit Yuka, and to be honest if this album was any smoother musically it would give a billiard ball a run for its money.

Self-produced and originally recorded on tape, I listened to this albuminfull while doing the cooking. It soon had me dancing through the pots and pans, and it takes something to get me dancing!! You try not moving to “Woman It’s Time”.

Yuka is largely known for doing instrumentals in the past, and this album is a slight departure in that it gives prominence to the striking vocals of Claire Doyle. This girl can sing. Here, the horns, trumpets, tenor sax, and a rhythm section comprising keyboards, guitars and drums, all keep the grooves moving.

My personal favourite from the album was “Outta Love”, as the rhythm drives a soulful lyric just so well. “Untrue” is another in the same vein, reminding me of Nina Simone somehow. There is great songwriting talent in this band.

I really liked this album. It put a smile on my face and got my feet moving.
