SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: FREEKBASS – ALL THE WAY THIS. ALL THE WAY THAT.

Freekbass

Freekbass
All The Way This. All The Way That.
Color Red

Cincinnati bass player Freekbass brings back the funk on his new project All the Way This. All the Way That.

The album was released via Color Red with co-production from Itaal Shur and Eddie Roberts. It embodies all that is funk – bringing the past and the future together to create a historical dedication to the Ohio funk sound from which Freekbass and Shur were bred. Featuring Rico Lewis, Sky White, Lonnie Marshall, and several others, the funk is timeless on this album.

Opening with heavy bass and angelic whispers from vocalist Sammi Garett, “Knuckle Sandwich” feels like something straight from the 1970s. The first couple of tracks blend seamlessly together, but “R U Ready” breaks up the monotony with futuristic keys from White. Freekbass and Garrett perfectly intertwine on the chorus, preparing us for the “freekshow.”

The year is 2088 and funk is still the name of the game, but Freekbass doesn’t hold back with his breakthrough message on “Stepping Outta Line.” He pushes the line, encouraging individuality, set over futuristic bass and a heavy chorus that includes contributions from Shur, Marshall, Lewis, and of course Garett.

The composition is the most impressive aspect of All the Way This. All the Way That. The intricacies of sound, artistry, and production mesh in an amazing way that pays homage to all facets of funk creating an overall solid album.
