SHHE
THALASSA
ONE LITTLE INDEPENDENT RECORDS

Your personal background comes into play at some point when you create music, and for the Scottish-Portuguese sound artist and producer Shhe (Su Shaw), for her new album Thalassa she references her Portuguese background. It is a six-part ambient piece where Shhe listens to the sounds of the Mediterranean Sea and at, as she points out, a “moment of ecological, political, and existential crisis.”
With such a concept it seems logical that the mood here has some quite dark overtones and the only other open question is how Shaw transforms all this into a set of substantial musical elements.
As with any other ambient piece of music, the end result depends how the artist is able to relate to any given listener, what are the visual images that the music is able to create, and Shaw eventually passes this test by recreating the encompassing crisis into something quite dark and brooding. Dark music for dark times.
