UNRELEASED SCOTT WEILAND SONG “IF I COULD FLY” OUT NOW | MARKS 10th ANNIVERSARY OF ICONIC FRONTMAN’S PASSING
PRIMARY WAVE/VIRGIN MUSIC
About 25 years ago, Scott Weiland, frontman for Stone Temple Pilots, wrote a song about his son, Noah, just after his birth. The song has been archived since then and has never been officially released on streaming outlets. To acknowledge and celebrate Weiland’s life, the track has been posthumously released to mark 10 years without Scott Weiland. The track saw its debut on physical formats this past week, as it premiered as a part of this past Record Store Day’s Black Friday exclusives, with a release on digital streaming platforms following not long after.
Scott Weiland passed away on December 3rd, 2015, at the age of 48. The circumstances of his passing make the song, emotionally titled “If I Could Fly,” an inherently moving track that speaks to the amount of heart and soul that Weiland would consistently pour into his work; it was either 100% or nothing for Weiland, and this track is no exception in the slightest.
On December 3rd, 2025, Noah Weiland hosted a tribute concert in honour of his father, where he performed his father’s songs to a packed venue of fans, old and new alike. Jakob Nowell, son of Bradley Nowell (the frontman for Sublime), also played a set, similarly performing and honouring his father’s work, at the tribute show. It was a viscerally moving night for everybody in attendance. The event was held at the Garden Amp in Garden Grove, California.
Simply put, the song is a masterpiece. Immediately, emphasized, gain-enhanced melodies rip through the distorted lead guitar, while the backing power chords instantly give it a full and emotional sound. These moments of instrumental catharsis are wrapped around restrained verses that feel akin to a modern-day lullaby. Even still, Scott proves that he’ll always be far ahead of whatever we refer to as modern music at that contemporary point in time. Scott’s distinct vocal style makes the song complete, and it’s a powerful treat for Stone Temple Pilots fans, as well as rock ‘n’ roll fans in general.
