JEI-RYNN – “SCREAMING INSIDE”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Jei-Rynn (birth name Jason Ledesma) was born and raised in sunny, southern California, a world which he came to feel foreign in. In his youth, his interests were always artistic, and when finding music, it became something of an answer. He started piano lessons at 10, and at 12, he began to teach himself the guitar and was soon writing his own songs. Songwriting became more than a hobby; it was an outlet. His songs have been described as “journal entries.”
Jason began playing in bands in his teens, opening for artists like the Higher, the Wonder Years, and John Nolan (of Taking Back Sunday). Later, he learned to self-produce his own work, performed once as part of the backing band for artist Olivia Rodrigo, and workshopped his own songs with mixing engineer and drummer Dan Konopka of OK Go.
From the chaos of the pandemic and civil unrest of the turn of the decade, the moniker of “Jei-Rynn” was first conceived. Working as a solo artist, Jason was able to delve into his influences and sound in ways he had never done before. His brand of alternative rock is new yet familiar, taking sonic nods from everything from hiphop to grunge. Guitar hooks reminiscent of edgy guitar bands like Nirvana or Joy Division lead some tracks, while others employ 808s and programmed beats like a Billie Eilish track. Though eclectic, the sound is singular, led by a distinct voice whose tones range from a whisper to a shout when passing from verse to chorus of the same song. Lyrically, the words are poetic and confessional. Personal, but universal. The artist also takes visual reference from favorite auteurs like the wonderfully strange David Lynch, the darkly whimsical Tim Burton, or the seminal Stanley Kubrick.
Though the project has been in utero, Jei-Rynn’s first releases are to be birthed in 2022. The Japanese-Italian-Latin American’s songs explore the human condition in minimalist fashion; themes of loneliness, identity, loss, anxiety and depression are present. Equal parts pop and indie, Jei-Rynn’s songs are written to speak for themselves.
ARTIST QUOTE
“Screaming Inside” is a post-pandemic, zillennial anthem that speaks to all of the pressing anxieties of the modern era, both personal and societal. Lyrically inspired by the recent threat of increased Asian-American hate crimes in America (the first line “stare at me like I’m a disease” was inspired by ugly looks Jei-Rynn received from strangers in the supermarket during the beginning of the pandemic), the song looks social silencing and young depression dead in the eye. ~Jei Rynn
