DINA SUMMER – “GIRLS GANG”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Berlin-based synth-wave trio Dina Summer – the band of DJ/producer duo Local Suicide and producer/live act Kalipo – return with the striking video for “Girls Gang”, the bold title track of their highly anticipated second album, released January 24th via Iptamenos Discos.
Formed five years ago, the group has carved out a distinctive sound described by RA as “dark disco meets EBM”, blending retro-futuristic new wave with electroclash and post-punk grit. Their 2022 debut album Rimini earned critical acclaim for its club-focused Italo and ’90s electro influences, while Girls Gang expands the palette with live bass and guitar, melodic hooks, and a more song-driven approach. Lyrically, the album moves through themes of empowerment, outsiderhood, nostalgia, love, and impermanence – with the title track standing as a rallying cry for solidarity and self-expression.
Directed by London-based Simone Pellegrini, the Girls Gang video plays out like a goth, exaggerated, bad-ass reimagining of the classic girl gang fantasy. Set partly in a moody club where the gang seduce and abduct unsuspecting men, and partly in a shadowy cemetery, the video is both an ode to goth icons and a celebration of female friendships. Filled with friends of the band, it radiates a raw sense of connection and dark humor.
Of course, there was drama on set: while filming the cemetery scenes at night, the team didn’t realize the gates would be locked after hours. Ricardo Castro – the mastermind behind London’s coolest goth parties and set to appear in the video – tried to leave early, found the gate shut, and attempted to scale a very high fence…only to injure his leg badly. “It’s such a cliché – the goth prince wounded in the cemetery – but it’s true”, the band says. Meanwhile, the rest of the gang managed to escape after wandering through the spooky, silent grounds and eventually finding another side exit. “We want to dedicate this video to Ricardo and send our love to him, to the incredibly talented (and probably the sweetest guy alive) Simone Pellegrini and the rest of our übercool girls and boys gang who made this video what it is.”
Since its release, the Girls Gang album has received praise from leading outlets and support from major DJs. Its 2LP features club versions, a Greek rendition of Halkidiki and remixes by legendary DJ Hell, Damon Jee, The Populists, and Phunkadelica
As if that wasn’t enough, the band also recruited more friends from the scene to create dancefloor-ready versions of every track on the album. The rollout includes a series of remix volumes, featuring reworks by the likes of Joyce Muniz, Moderna, and other rising artists from the dark disco scene and beyond. Vol. 2 is already out, and Vol. 3 is being released gradually as singles – leading to the Deluxe Edition of Girls Gang, set for October 3rd. Meanwhile, Dina Summer continue to bring their hypnotic live show to stages across Europe, with dates in Berlin, Wiesbaden, Nürnberg, Lübeck, and more to be announced.
With Girls Gang Dina Summer deliver more than just a track – it’s a fierce, darkly glamorous tribute to friendship, attitude, and the irresistible pull of the night brought vividly to life by Simone Pellegrini’s playful, cinematic vision.
ARTIST QUOTE
“The concept for “Girls Gang” music video was to blend elements of witchy gothic imaginarium and 70’s feminist exploitation movies.
A mix of The Craft’s occult sisterhood and Switchblade Sisters’ girl-gang toughness with a modern twist, placed in the underground clubs of Berlin.
Shooting this video was quite a challenge, especially as I am not based in Berlin and technically filming as a “one man band” without a full crew. But it was also extremely fun working with all the lovely and supportive people that got involved in this project.
Thanks to all the “Berlin Gang” and a special one to Ricardo Castro! 🖤” ~Simone Pelligrini (Video Creator)
