ANDREW DEEVEY – “MONEY CAN’T BUY ME LOVE”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Today we have the pleasure of introducing single “Money Can’t Buy Me Love”, the latest single from Liverpudlian singer-songwriter Andrew Deevey, the latest offering in a decades-long music career that began with The Decemberists (UK) and Hellfire Sermons and graduated to membership in The Caretaker Race and The Bitter Springs.
Not here to wallow in hard times, Deevey transmutes the working man’s worries into a chorus you can shout back at the world. On “Money Can’t Buy Me Love,” he distills decades of guitar-pop devotion into three minutes of sharp melody and sharper observation, bottling the squeeze of modern life in a way that feels less like a complaint and more like a rallying cry. It’s indie rock with its collar up against the wind, equal parts streetwise and swooning.
Now based in London, Deevey dishes up a sharply observed slice of indie-pop that feels both intimate and quietly defiant. Channeling the melodic sensibility of bands synonymous with the British invasion and janglepop, Deevey balances bright guitar lines with an undercurrent of economic unease. The song confronts the grind of modern living—where wages evaporate as quickly as they arrive—yet refuses to sink into cynicism, instead elevating human connection above material strain. There’s a timeless quality to the hook, driven by chiming strings, harmonica flourishes and a lean rhythmic backbone, that makes the message land with clarity rather than preachiness.
Deevey lends some insight into the new single and its roots:
“‘Money Can’t Buy Me Love’ reflects on austerity-era realities — the squeeze of the credit crunch, rising costs, having no money and the sense that even when you do earn money, it quickly disappears. It feels like someone is always making money out of you — taxes, parking, fines, bills — it never stops. But the things that really matter can’t be bought.
I wanted the songs to work acoustically or with a full band. I now play live with guitar, harmonica and drum machine — no waiting around. I’ve been playing these songs and getting good feedback from people. At one festival, someone told me, “You just blow them away”… That’s the reaction I’m after.”
In the end, “Money Can’t Buy Me Love” lands like a postcard from the edge of overdraft culture—wry, melodic, and stubbornly hopeful. Deevey proves that you don’t need a wall of amps or studio gloss to make a statement; just a ringing guitar, a hook that sticks, and something real to say. In an era obsessed with price tags and platforms, he’s betting on heart over hype—and that’s a wager that pays off.
There’s an unvarnished confidence here, the product of decades immersed in Britain’s guitar-pop lineage, yet the delivery feels immediate and personal rather than nostalgic. “Money Can’t Buy Me Love” ultimately plays like a reaffirmation: even in financially fraught times, melody and meaning still matter more than the numbers in your bank account.
Recorded at One Cat Studios, Antenna Studios in South London, this single was mixed, produced and mastered by Jon Clayton, renowned for his work with The Monochrome Set, Band of Holy Joy, Vic Godard and The Subway Sect, The Near Jazz Experience and Carter USM frontman’s project Jim Bob.
