Crywolf Premieres First Single, ‘Rising, Off Debut Album, ‘Cataclasm’ and Heads in a New Direction
Fresh off of a forty-five day journey of self-isolation in a remote Icelandic village, Crywolf reveals the first single, ‘Rising, Rising’, from his resulting album ‘Cataclasm.’ A distinct and purposeful departure from the sound and feel of his previous projects, Cataclasm marks the beginning of a new artistic chapter for the LA-based wunderkind. When confronted with the question “where am I going?”, Rising, Rising provides a resounding answer in the form of lush acoustics, otherworldly percussion and indie pop sensibilities.
“I’ve had this reoccurring daydream where I walk outside my house, look upwards, and start to slowly float towards the sky. Suspended in the air, rising up, the people and buildings on the ground getting smaller and smaller… It has always given me this very unique feeling that I can’t pin down; Almost like a nostalgia for something that hasn’t happened yet. I get this invigorating feeling of moving on to another world. I’m not sure where this single came from inside of me, but I know it has to do with that image. I recorded this entire song with real instruments. I wanted to feel the music in my hands as I created it. It doesn’t have specified verses and choruses; it just floats from movement to movement, slowly evolving and growing. I wanted it to be a journey.” – Crywolf
Rising, Rising is the first introduction to the eccentric and captivating new world that is Crywolf. Beautiful, nostalgic instruments float over aggressive, stomping organic percussion. Phillips cries his vocal melodies and harmonies over the top of it all, with engrossing lyrics that somehow occupy a space that is both immensely sorrowful and uplifting at the same time. The song itself is relatively laid back, but it projects incredibly intensity. Though difficult to categorize, Rising is thoroughly addicting, making it almost impossible not to hit repeat.
