WEATHERELL SHARES DEBUT SINGLE “SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL”
DEBUT ALBUM COMING SOON
Toronto’s newest shoegaze, grunge, and post-punk electronica artist, Weatherell, releases his debut single, “Something Beautiful.” Rooted in ’90s and early 2000s textures, the track channels personal loss, resilience, and perseverance into an earworm that is both heavy and euphoric. Weatherell is the moniker of producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Sean Hackl (Fade Awaays, BBQ Pope), a veteran of the city’s indie scene.
On “Something Beautiful,” the emotions run throughout: whether it be in the lyric “Tell me the truth, or lie, give me the destination of, where to get lost tonight, I wanna feel something beautiful,” in the Behringer TD-3 bass synth passed down from his late Fade Awaays bandmate, or in the layered guitars, driving drums, and anthemic chorus that bring it all together.
“Something Beautiful is a song full of dichotomy, two voices speaking over each other—one of honesty, the other of deception. On one hand, this is a song is about trying to find love for oneself while encapsulated in the struggle of addiction—On the other hand, it’s a love song to a dear friend who lost this struggle and their memory,” shares Sean.
After the sudden passing of his Fade Awaays bandmate in 2022, Sean sought to channel grief into his healing, shifting his focus into one goal: make the best album he possibly could, channeling his energy into catharsis and honouring his late friend. Inspired by a love for 90’s electronica and dance music, coupled with his indie rock-roots, Sean began setting the foundations for the project in early 2023, compiling demos, writing new music, and re-working old songs.
“Something Beautiful” comes from that collection of work and was brought to life with the help of co-producers Sam Arion (Mute Choir, Sofia Camara) and Dylan Frankland (Tallies, Dean Blunt). The song was mastered by JUNO award winning engineer, Kristian Montano (The Beaches, Ruby Waters, Aysanabee). Additionally, Frankland helped engineer, and mix the record, which saw the duo spend eight months studio-hopping around Ontario producing live drums, guitars, bass and vocals for the collection of songs.
The name for the project took some time to land but Sean ultimately decided on Weatherell, which is borrowed from Sean’s childhood street name where he grew up learning to play music. As well, Weatherell pays homage to the inspirational producer of Primal Screams’, Screamadelica, Andrew Weatherall. The music video accompanying the song’s release was shot by Sean while he was spending time in Berlin last year.
“With Something Beautiful, I think everybody can relate to it in one way or another, we all know someone who is actively struggling with, or has struggled with addiction, but there’s also so many people who we don’t know are struggling with addiction. This song exists because of that blind-spot. The veil of mystery around addiction can be so dangerous.”
Also out, the accompanying music video was filmed throughout Berlin last summer by Sean and his brother Dylan (director) who was studying at the Catalyst Institute for Creative Arts. Shot in and around landmarks like Hauptbahnhof and Alexanderplatz stations, the streets of Mitte, and the walkways along the Spree, the video follows a character spiralling through the city in a paranoid, bender-like attempt to outrun his thoughts and past, where the worlds of Mission: Impossible and Trainspotting collide.
“I think a music video needs to be unique enough that it is memorable and makes you feel a certain way when watching it,” says Sean. “Whether it leaves you with melancholy, confusion, hope, amusement, or awe, I think a good video is something you can keep coming back to and appreciate differently each time…and I think we were able to achieve this.”
