The B-side to the flowing instrumental jolliness of “Frizzante”, “Turandot” takes a dramatic turn as a hauntingly sophisticated soundtrack staged by New Jersey multi-instrumentalist Marco Benevento and Italian chanteuse Marianne Mirage.
“Turandot” (a Puccini opera from the 1920s based on a play from the 1760s) sways elegantly, but is fraught with danger, sitting somewhere between Portishead, Serge Gainsbourg and the opening credits to a classic Bond film, and whose romantic language and arrangements occupy the space between easy listening and a dapper whodunnit (“every goodbye is painful but necessary”).
