AVA McCOY SHARES “YOUNG GIRL” SINGLE & VIDEO
ACROPHASE RECORDS
Brooklyn-based indie folk rock singer-songwriter Ava McCoy has released a new single, “Young Girl,” via Acrophase Records (Mali Velasquez, Ginger Root, Font), alongside a music video filmed in the beautiful Oregon countryside. The new song follows her independently released 2022 debut Moss on the Ceiling, and most recently, an EP called Closer to the Bugs, which marked her intial partnership with Acrophase. Of the single, McCoy offers, “‘Young Girl’ is a love letter to my younger self and all of the dreams she had. There have been many iterations of my creative self, and this song ties all of the varied versions of me into one. I sing about mistakes, breakthroughs, disappointments, and my core music memories as a kid.”
The 24-year-old native New Yorker is the only member of her Oregon-based family to be raised in a crowded metropolis. She grew up surrounded by professional musicians and started writing songs at a very early age. “Young Girl” finds her going back to her Oregon roots at six years old in the back of a car / Roy Book Binder, John Prine, learned about Big Star. Recorded during a series of sessions in Nashville with producer Josef Kuhn (Samia, Mali Velasquez, Annie DiRusso), the track reintroduces McCoy as not just a songwriter, but as a storyteller, letting the natural power of her lyrics shine, undistorted by excessive layers of sound. The accompanying music video features McCoy immersed in the same rural Pacific Northwest scenery that has inspired “Young Girl” and much of her upcoming new music: horses roaming across sprawling grasslands, winding roads through lush forest landscapes, fog creeping over mountainous horizons.
Of recording the track and video, McCoy adds, “Jos and I recorded ‘Young Girl’ in his home studio in East Nashville. I spent a month there in 2023 working on my next album, and this song was probably the most fun. We wrote the bridge together, and really leaned into the true-Americana feel that the songwriting asks for. I made the video with my boyfriend, Aidan, when we were in Oregon visiting a former dude ranch where I spent a lot of summers. We thought the landscape spoke for itself, and showed a side to my bicoastal upbringing that I don’t normally share. I had COVID at the time, so we just shot everything outside far away from people, and the horses really stole the show. I got Aidan out of bed at 6 am and we biked over to the meadow where the horses are let out every morning – the mist we captured is still one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. The video is a time capsule of a place and time I love so much, and shows me in my truest state.”
A love letter to both early childhood and young adulthood, “Young Girl” verbalizes what so many of us are afraid to face: the fear of being wrong, of loving too hard, and of leaving anything unsaid. Young girl, it’s a big world, your first time at life / I think you have it down now, I still have the appetite.
