THE FERTILE CRESCENT – “ONION GARDEN”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Missoula, Montana isn’t necessarily the first place that comes to mind when you think of a burgeoning artist culture but that’s exactly what is happening. A new wave of youthful talent is taking the city by storm and showing that there is something worth discovering. One of these new acts is the funky soul-rock band The Fertile Crescent. The group is comprised of seven music students who are joining forces and playing what they call, “the people’s music.”
This new single, “Onion Garden” is an example of what this band is capable of. Full of tight-pocket rhythms, groovy bass riffs and a horn section that will knock your socks off, The Fertile Crescent spreads infectious and refreshing energy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The music plays off of retro soul-funk sounds with a rough-around-the-edges type of approach. That’s not to say the playing is anything other than top-notch, but the production elicits a DIY charm that is to be admired. The languid guitar solo midway through adds the perfect amount of summer-come-early fun. With unique movements and progressions, it’s easy to see that this young band has a bright future ahead.
Artist Quote
Onion Garden was The Fertile Crescent’s first original song we’ve ever played. It has since been treated as the song that is the “iconic Fertile Crescent sound.” It synthesizes the goal of our sound and energy with simple chord progressions and melody, easy words, and horn arrangements that can fill whatever room we play. At shows we take liberties with the song like trading solos, adding sections, and improvising because it takes a really long time to get old.
