RACHAEL SAGE & THE SEQUINS – “COLORIZED WORLD (ACOUSTIC)”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Acclaimed alt-folk-Americana singer-songwriter Rachael Sage & The Sequins have just released “Colorized World (Acoustic)” ahead of her new album, Under My Canopy, due October 9th via MPress Records. The upbeat, musically complex, coming-of-age love song showcases Sage’s versatile vocal range, bringing to mind contemporary story songs like Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams with a touch of ’90s nostalgia (think early Jewel, Lisa Loeb and Alanis). Sage writes: “In this colorized world you’re a girl who could be/So much more than you are like a shooting star/Just be sure to show it when you finally know it…when you finally know.”
The music’s colorful texture serves as a lilting bedrock for the tune, with Sage contributing percussion and piano, while The Sequins – Andy Mac (Pete Muller and the Kindred Souls), Kelly Halloran (Goo Goo Dolls, Lainey Wilson), and Dave Eggar (Paul Simon) add acoustic guitar, violin, and cello, respectively. Mix in upright bass, courtesy of Kerry Brooks (Amy Ray Band, Indigo Girls), and accordionist Rob Curto (Lila Downs), and “Colorized World (Acoustic)” promises to lift one’s spirits.
Rachael discusses the song, saying: “‘Colorized World (Acoustic)” is a very important song for me because it was written in my mid-20s. I had fallen in love in NYC right after college with someone much older and more established in their career than I was, who was touring the world with major artists, and it was all very challenging and there was a lot of sturm und drang with them being away so much and me just getting my bearings in the local scene. In those early NYC days I was so young, wide-eyed and just struggling to figure myself out. I am still a romantic and try to keep my heart open even though it’s been challenging to find deep and lasting connection in the years since my cancer recovery – and being a touring musician adds to that challenge. I hope that by including this coming-of-age love song in the record, it makes even just one person feel more seen, and less alone.”
Rachael Sage & The Sequins’ upcoming album, Under My Canopy, reinvents the diverse collection of songs that feel like a refuge, woven from resilience, longing, and the irrepressible determination to find light in the darkest places from their previously lauded studio album, Canopy. Featuring fresh acoustic instrumentation and imaginative new arrangements, Sage and her band continue their ongoing journey of storytelling and emotional connection. Confidently spanning the genres of Americana, pop and neo-folk, the record offers listeners a beautifully crafted, deeply heartfelt assortment of songs that find common ground in themes of living a purposeful and joyful life rooted in inclusiveness, equality and non-violence. Reflective, mournful yet optimistic, Under My Canopy is one of her most soulful and thought-provoking works yet.
Sharing stages with seminal musicians such as Rufus Wainwright, Ani DiFranco, and Judy Collins – with whom she also recorded a critically-acclaimed duet –Sage’s career has been defined by a passion for storytelling and an innovative sense of creativity. In addition to being a six-time Independent Music Award-winning musician and producer, Rachael Sage Sage is also a John Lennon Contest Grand Prize winner who has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, SXSW, and toured globally from Japan to Berlin with her band, The Sequins. Sage is also a visual artist and former ballet dancer who performed with the New York City Ballet. A self-described “cancer thriver”, she is additionally a philanthropic advocate who has raised money for a wide range of causes, including Foundation For Women’s Cancer, WHY Hunger, American Refugee Committee, and National Network For Youth (NN4Y), Rainbow Mind, and The Trevor Project. Under My Canopy will be released October 9th via ILS/Virgin/Universal.
