MYRA LEE – “DEAN”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Brooklyn-based alt-rock trio Myra Lee return with “Dean,” the second single from their forthcoming debut release Capture The Flag, due out June 26. Formerly performing as Dino Expedition, the band takes its current name from a 1996 Cat Power record—a fitting nod to the raw emotional terrain they now inhabit.
Comprised of lead singer and guitarist Tahlia Amanson, bassist Aiden Velazquez, and drummer McCabe Teems, Myra Lee channel the spirit of ’90s indie rock while carving out a sound distinctly their own. Drawing inspiration from acts like Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Electrelane, and Sonic Youth, the trio balances hazy textures with jagged intensity, landing somewhere between dreamlike introspection and cathartic release.
Their debut, Capture The Flag, was recorded over the course of two days in a basement studio on the Lower East Side. The band live-tracked six songs with engineer Jeremy Harris—known for his work with Devendra Banhart, Hand Habits, and Allegra Krieger—before handing the sessions off to producer Calvin Lauber (Boygenius, Julien Baker), who mixed and mastered the project in Memphis. The result is a collection that feels both immediate and immersive, weaving together themes of alcoholism, sexuality, and grief with an unflinching sense of honesty.
“Dean” emerges as one of the record’s most haunting moments. Built on crashing drums and waves of distorted guitar, the track unfolds like a memory half-submerged, with Amanson’s vocals drifting between clarity and collapse. It’s a piece of immersive storytelling that captures the band at their most vulnerable and evocative.
“My youngest sister, Ondine, had multiple near death experiences before she was two years old,” Amanson shares. “I wrote ‘Dean’ specifically highlighting the one summer when my mother brought us to the docks to go swimming. She handed Ondine to my other sister, who didn’t catch her, and Ondine fell into the water, sinking beneath the surface unable to swim. We thought we lost her, again.”
With Capture The Flag, Myra Lee deliver a debut that is raw, intimate, and quietly devastating—an introduction that lingers long after the final note fades.
“Dean” arrives May 8, with Capture The Flag set for release June 26 on all DSPs.
