DETECTIVE LARSSON – “WAND’RIN'”/”WAND’RIN’ STAR”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Detective Larsson is a band based in Blaenrhondda, a former mining village in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, sketching the secret worlds of the outsider.
This two-track release features “Wand’rin’”, an original with Amanda Larsson’s vocals and guitar, Neil Jones’s Korg synthesisers and Nigel Hobbins’ jangling mandolin, alongside a roughly-hewn cover of Lerner and Loewe / Lee Marvin’s Wand’rin’ Star with the same arrangement.
Of the members for the release, lead singer and guitarist Amanda is from Skövde in Sweden, now based in the Rhondda Valley, and Neil (synths) are joined by Nigel (mandolin), a widely recognised folk musician steeped in local history, from Challock on the North Downs of Kent, now based in the coastal town of Whitstable.
DL cite their influences as far and wide as Nico and Neko Case, Patsy Cline and The Jesus and Mary Chain, noir and new wave.
ARTIST QUOTE
A lyrical heartbreak Pop song from the Rhondda Valley. The Swedish line (singer & guitarist Amanda is Swedish) translates as “so happy that we. -Wand’rin
We envisioned it as an orchestra of synths creating a sound of hazy heat behind Amanda’s vocal, like a morning star in a desert that’s probably a mirage. We played and recorded it like that, leaving all the frayed edges and fall offs where they are. It’s wall-of-sound desolation with a flicker of hope, and the jangle of our friend Nigel’s Whitstable mandolin. And it’s a Lerner and Loewe song, originally released by Lee Marvin, who passed away 39 years ago almost to the month, in late August 1987. – Wand’rin’ Star
