BRETT – “ON THE RISE”
A Spill Exclusive Musicย Premiere
Over the last four years,ย Brettย have produced a consistent wave of pop music. The styles have ranged from cold electronic pop to lush dreampop to reverb-drenched country. For the LA band’s newest collection, they veer sharply from their previous catalogue in favor of driving drums and walls of guitar feedback.
2018’s ‘Half’ EP abandons the summery, feel-good mood of 2017’sย Mustangsย EP, and instead explores the complex emotional landscapes of a divisive society through obliquely political lyrics. While the project’s trademark melodic choices are in tact, guitars and drums take a front seat sonically and the themes of the collection come viscerally to life. Finding influence in New Order, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and The Cure, this set of songs adds depth toย Brett‘sย larger catalogue as the band is not afraid to venture to new sonic territory, or paint a darker picture of the changing world.’
Artist Quote
‘With ‘On theย Rise,’ย Brettย turn a decidedly bleaker direction, relying on early 80’s darkwave over the summery country feel of 2017’s ‘Mustangs’ EP. The song, written on Inauguration Day 2017, summons the energy of a divided and bitter America–an America of stark contrasts: black and white, rich and poor, malignant and hopeful. The sardonic lyrical tone paints images of humanity’s fearful and shadowy places, even going so far as to interpolate a line from Yeats’ famous post apocalyptic poem, ‘The Second Coming.’ On 2018’s ‘Half’ EP,ย Brettย depict a new and jaded reality, where our virtues are silenced, and our vices grab the megaphone.’
