Bettie Serveert – “B-Cuz”
A Spill Exclusive Music Premiere
I can’t say that I’ve explored many bands hailing from The Netherlands – I’d be hard pressed to name anyone other than Bettie Serveert who, ever since releasing their hugely praised ‘Palomine’ album, released in 1992, I had actually thought was a British band. It even turns out that vocalist Carol Van Dyk is Canadian born, so today, we are even more pleased to present the premiere of the new single from this seminal 90s band.
Called ‘B-Cuz’, this track is from from the band’s ‘Damaged Good’ LP, which is being released on April 22 by North Carolina-based label Schoolkids Records on exclusive limited-edition vinyl as part of Record Store Day. This limited edition exclusive transparent magenta Vinyl LP (with beautiful gatefold packaging) will include a digital download and full CD. This is the only version of the LP or CD available in North America and, as it turns out, the only Dutch release to be approved by the USA Record Store Day commission.
On ‘B-Cuz’, Bettie Serveert offer a positive, energy-filled upbeat track that calls to mind such names as The Primitives, Throwing Muses and The Bangles. Upon first listen to this track, I was impressed at how seamlessly they dish out a perfectly balanced offering of pop and rock with a twise, leaving you with a healthy dose of adrenaline. The cleverly-plotted accompanying video was directed and filmed by Sjors Schuitemaker.
Bettie Serveert is a four-piece comprised of Carol van Dyk (vocals and guitar), Peter Visser (guitar), Herman Bunskoeke (bass guitar) and Joppe Molenaar (drums). They obviously have had time to hone their sound and master their skills. In fact, this is 11th studio album, issued on the band’s 25th Anniversary.
‘Damaged Good’ is one of ‘The Betties’ most diverse albums so far, including 11 tracks ranging from 60 seconds to an 8 min epos and everything in between. It was recorded and mixed with Jesse Beuker, with whom Canadian-born vocalist Carol van Dyk and lead guitarist Peter Visser have worked before on their Australian project ‘Me & Stupid’, and mastered by Darius van Helfteren. This album also includes ‘Love Sick’ with Peter te Bos, vocalist from renowned Dutch band Claw Boys Claw.
“B-Cuz” Lyrics
Can we build a bridge and just get over it?
Learn how to deal with everything we never did
Sometimes it feels like I’m out of my mind
Nothing is real and nothing rhymes
Forget what you want, it’s not what you need
Get yourself back on your own two feet
Never be a liar, never be a git
‘Cause you know, you know it’s just not worth it
A killer daisy on my shoulder with a pen
To remind me not to lose myself again
Sometimes it feels like I’m out of my mind
Nothing is real and nothing rhymes
Forget what you want, it’s not what you need
Get yourself back on your own two feet
Never be a liar, never be a git
‘Cause you know it’s just not worth it all
B-cuz, B-cuz, B-cuz you know the cause
B-cuz, B-cuz, B-cuz
Nothing is real
Forget what you want, it’s not what you need
Get yourself back on your own two feet
Never be a liar, never be a git
‘Cause you know, you know it’s just not worth it
