BEAUTY IN CHAOS – “GOD’S GONNA CUT YOU DOWN”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
A project that we’ve supported since near-inception has made a return after a rather short hiatus of just a few months. Today we herald the news that Beauty In Chaos, steered by axe-man Michael Ciravolo, has momentarily parked its post-punk shadows to deliver a duo of stunningly austere spiritual transmissions.
Not your standard cover-band karaoke, “God’s Gonna Cut You Down / Get Down Moses” is a masterclass in sonic transubstantiation. With world-class producer Michael Rozon polishing the edges, BIC transmutes a staple of the American folk canon – one still echoing Johnny Cash’s gravel – into a swamp-gothic drone, immediately followed by the righteous indignation of a Joe Strummer deep cut – namely “Get Down Moses”.
The new two-song digital EP single features an enveloping, smokey rendition of the traditional gospel hymn “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”, popularized by The Man in Black himself – Mr. Johnny Cash (who also happens to be a distant cousin to BIC’s own Tish Ciravolo), along with the B-side showcasing Beauty In Chaos’ own take on Joe Strummer’s “Get Down Moses”.
BIC transforms these familiar anthems into a mesmerizing, brooding experience that lingers long after the music stops. This stunning rendition of “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” resides in similar territory to Tom Waits and Nick Cave, opting for a slow, spectral trudge that evokes images of shadowy, humid Southern streets.
Ciravolo’s vocal presence is surprisingly subtle—a grave narration that perfectly suits the impending doom of the theme. His unvarnished delivery cuts through the humidity, anchoring a sound that feels simultaneously utterly contemporary. He is joined by Michael Rozon (lap steel guitar, snare drum, voices), plus Tish Ciravolo, Whitney Tai, Set Miller, Anthony Love and Tim Perry (background vocals and foot stomps).

Conversely, “Get Down Moses” retains the song’s spirit of rebellion while bathing it in guitar textures, proving the band can pivot successfully when it comes to spiritual reckoning. This is a compelling listen that expands the boundaries of the ensemble’s established sound.
“While both of these songs have certainly been covered before, I think we have injected BIC into them, even if we have stretched, what some have come to expect from us sonically. I think the haunted New Orleans’ French Quarter vibe compliments our approach to the song. There is certainly an underlying story-line running through the video, which is left to an individual’s interpretation. But in the end; good indeed triumphs over evil,” says Ciravolo.
The video for “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”, filmed and directed by Vicente Cordero (Industrialism Films) and edited by Ryan Conlon, was based on a concept by Michael Ciravolo.
Past BIC releases involve members of The Cure, Ministry, Cheap Trick, The Offspring, Gene Loves Jezebel, Marilyn Manson, Human Drama, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Van Halen, A Flock of Seagulls and dUg Pinnick, ICE-T, Rolan Bolan and Zakk Wylde, among many other luminaries.
The new single is available everywhere digitally, including Beauty In Chaos’ store and Bandcamp.
